At a glance

Alopecia (hair loss) affects up to 60% of men, with around 25% starting to lose their hair before the age of 30. The most common form of male hair loss is known as male pattern baldness, and results from the natural effects of the male sex hormone testosterone.

We offer the first drug in history to effectively treat male pattern baldness in most men who use it. It is an oral medication that works by slowing the breakdown of testosterone into DHT – a key chemical in the process of male pattern baldness. It can effectively lower DHT levels in the scalp by as much as 60% when taken daily.

Symptoms

Symptoms of male hair loss include:

  • Gradual thinning of hair at your temples, hairline, and crown (the top of your head)
  • Hairline gradually moves backward (recedes) and forms an "M" shape
  • Circular area on the back of the head (vertex) thinning and expanding in size over time
  • Hair becoming finer, shorter, and thinner, creating a U-shaped (or horseshoe) pattern of hair around the sides of the head
  • A bald patch on the top of your head
  • A bald area on the back of the head

Treatments

Treatments for male hair loss depends on the severity of the condition. Finasteride and minoxidil are the main prescriptions for male hair loss.

Your GP may refer you to a specialist dermatologist if you have an extreme case of male hair loss.

About Finasteride:

Finasteride has been shown to slow down further hair loss in about 80% to 90% of men taking it. Some men also see some hair regrowth, which tends to occur in men who start finasteride when they first notice signs of hair loss.

Treatment type:

Oral tablet

Possible side effects:

Some men experience loss of libido, inability to get or keep an erection, tenderness on or around the nipples, and depression. It’s been reported that sexual side effects can continue after a patient stops taking finasteride.

How long it takes to see results:

Results can normally be seen in about 6 months.

About Minoxidil:

Minoxidil has been shown to reduce hair loss, stimulate hair growth, and strengthen existing strands of hair. While minoxidil can help, you’re unlikely to see full regrowth.

Treatment type:

Only a topical minoxidil solution is offered in this service. Oral  minoxidil is not available.

We will offer oral finasteride when clinically appropriate.

Possible side effects:

Some men develop an irritated or itchy scalp when using minoxidil. Other side effects can include headaches.

How long it takes to see results:

Some men see results between six to 12 months. In some cases, men may fail to see any difference.
