What your weight loss journey looks like

Thorough assessment: Before our GPs prescribe any medication or suggest alternative weight loss measures, an initial assessment is necessary. Please be mindful that whatever treatment our GPs advise must be used in conjunction with other weight loss measures e.g. improved diet. Injectable medication option: If you’re aged 18-75 with a BMI over 30, your GP may prescribe an injectable weight loss medication. If your BMI is under 30, we don’t usually recommend injections unless there’s a pre-existing weight-related condition. In that case, we’ll need a diagnosis letter from your family GP.  Oral medication option: If your BMI is under 30, your GP may offer oral medication to help with weight loss. This can be discussed during your weight management consultation. Meeting weight loss targets: If you’re prescribed medication, we’ll set you some weight loss goals. It’s important to reach these goals to continue treatment. If not, your GP may decide to stop the medication.

When can I get treatment?

Our weight management service is available to adults aged 18-75 years old in the following cases:

(i) If you have a BMI of over 30 -  in this case, we will prescribe injectable medication.

(ii) If you have a  BMI of between 27 and 30, with at least one weight-related condition (pre-diabetes, T2DM, hypertension, dyslipidaemia or obstructive sleep apnoea) - in this case, we will require a letter from your GP stating that you have been previously diagnosed with a weight-related condition, in order to prescribe you injectable medication.

(iii) If you have a  BMI of between 27 and 30, without a weight-related condition - in this case we will offer oral medication.

If you're unsure, calculate your BMI here.

Please note: the pharmacist will check your weight and height and measure your waist in the pharmacy. If your BMI is significantly different to the one you stated in the questionnaire, you will be referred back to the Irish Clinic GP team and your medication may not be dispensed.

How does weight management medication work?

Our weight management medications can include injections with a GLP-1 inhibitor. You naturally secrete GLP-1 after you eat – but the GLP-1 inhibitor suppresses your appetite so you don't feel as hungry. It can help with weight loss when combined with dietary and lifestyle changes.
